Legal Intake Counselor Internships
Intake Counselor internships are available in the legal department of the American Civil
Liberties Union of Washington. A six month commitment is required, with a minimum of 12
hours each week during ACLU-WA office hours (M-F, 9:00-5:00).

Interns assist callers on the ACLU Intake and Referral Line and review and investigate
complaints alleging violations of civil liberties and. Interns address a broad spectrum of issues,
including free speech, student discipline, police practices, criminal law, and prison and jail

Intake Counselors learn interview and investigation skills, explore civil liberties and
constitutional law issues, and become familiar with the work of a wide range of government
agencies and community organizations. The internship provides excellent experience for
individuals considering careers in public service, law, criminal justice, or public policy.

Applicants should:

  • have an interest in civil liberties
  • good interpersonal and analytical skills,
  • excellent writing skills.
  • Spanish language proficiency is a plus.
