Arabic placement exams are offered beginning two weeks after the end of spring quarter, up until two weeks before the beginning of autumn quarter (Summer Quarter). Exams will be graded after the exam period closes. Scores are good for 1 year. RETEST: Department Permission
French 2 hours multiple choice questions, no listening may only be taken twice ever, no waiting period between retests
German 1 hour 40 minutes multiple choice questions, no listening may be taken no more than three times, no waiting period
Italian 2 hours multiple choice questions, no listening may only be taken twice ever
Portuguese 2 hours written translation and short answer questions test may be taken once per quarter, no more than 3 times
Spanish 2 hours read essay and respond to essay questions in English

test may be taken once per quarter, no more than 3 times. Testing is available only during the following dates. Second and third weeks of the quarter:
Autumn 2019: Oct 2-16

Winter 2020: Jan 13 – Jan 23

Spring 2020: April 6 – April 16

Scores are typically available by the end of each quarter.

FEE: $50

Fees are payable by cash or check, made payable to: University of Washington.

Credit and Debit cards are NOT accepted.

RESULTS: Results are provided to student and sponsoring department within approximately two weeks
  • No aids permitted except when expressly noted on test version
  • Sample German and Portuguese GFLE exams are available. Please email to ask a sample.
  • No samples available for other languages
  • Scoring for multiple choice tests performed by OEA Testing Center
  • Scoring for translation tests performed by appropriate language department

Disability Accommodation

To request disability accommodation for testing, please contact the OEA Testing Center at least (1-2) week prior to desired test date via email at before registering for the test.  Please include documentation from DRS or PDF letter stating the accommodation needs from a medical provider.  Do not send a diagnosis.  If you are a UW student, please register with the Disability Resources for Students department if needed.
