College Level Examination Program


The U.W. Academic Testing Center is currently closed and working remotely until further notice. We will update our pages when we have a return date, pending UW and public health approval. Please contact for any questions.
C.L.E.P. does not have a remote testing option at this time. 

C.L.E.P. is a College Board testing program delivered by colleges and universities throughout the United States that offers exams in the areas of Social Science, Business, Mathematics, Technology, Humanities, and Physical Science.

We do not provide optional essays for Analyzing and Interpreting Literature, American Literature, College Composition Modular, or English Literature. College Composition is the only test which has an integrated mandatory essay scored by C.L.E.P. Note: Test format will be computer-based.

Note: The University of Washington does not award credit for this exam.

FEE: There are two fees for the C.L.E.P. test:

  1. C.L.E.P. test fee of $89 (as of July 1st, 2019) that is paid by credit card through your My Account Portal on the C.L.E.P. website.  This is paid directly to college board to register for the C.L.E.P. test company prior to scheduling a testing appointment.  The C.L.E.P. test fee of $87 will still apply to all exams purchased through June 30, 2019.
  2. University of Washington test administration fee is $60.00. This is paid to the University of Washington for proctoring services on test day.

    Fees are payable by cash or check, made payable to: University of Washington.

    Credit and Debit cards are NOT accepted.

Please register at least two weeks in advance of the desired test date. Space is limited.

TEST LENGTH: 90 minutes
ON THE DAY OF THE TEST: The examinee must bring:

  1. $60 proctoring fee (see above) CASH/CHECK
  2. Admission ticket/voucher confirming C.L.E.P. fee payment through the My Account portal
  3. (1) form of valid ID. Acceptable ID :driver’s license, passport or other government-issued identification that includes your photograph and signature.

The last name on your primary ID must match the name on your registration ticket. (Effective July 1, 2014, Secondary ID is not required.) If you arrive after the scheduled check-in time, or if you arrive without proper identification, you will not be admitted to the test. For information regarding individual exams, please visit the C.L.E.P. website.

RESULTS: Your preliminary C.L.E.P. exam scores are available immediately, unless you are taking the English Composition Exam with essay. If no score recipient code has been entered through your My Account portal by the time of testing, C.L.E.P. will charge a $20 transcript fee to send scores to your college.  Please note:

If your institution has not received your score report or transcript within 15 business days after your score send or transcript request was submitted, contact C.L.E.P. customer service at 800-257-9558.

If you are a current or former military service member and your institution has not received your military transcript within 10 business days after you have made your request, call 877-471-9860 (toll-free) or 651-603-3012.

RETESTS: Test-takers must wait three (3) months (90 calendar days) from their last test date to retest on the same C.L.E.P. title(s).

C.L.E.P. exams will be offered:

  • Tuesdays: 9:30am and 1:15pm
  • Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays: 9:30am and 1:30pm

Disability Accommodation

To request disability accommodation for testing, please contact the U.W. Testing Center at least (1-2) week prior to desired test date via phone call (206)543-1171 or email at before registering for the test.  Please include documentation from Disability Resources for Students or a from a medical provider stating the accommodation needs.  Do not send a diagnosis.  If you are a U.W. student, please register with the Disability Resources for Students department if needed.
