2018MakerSummitYou’re invited to participate in the third annual UW Maker Summit on April 21, 2018. This event will bring together some of the most creative talents the UW and Seattle community has to offer! Submit a project, perform during open mic nite, be a featured speaker, or simply attend. It’s a free event open to all.

IMPORTANT DEADLINE!  Submit your application to participate by April 9, 2018 NOTE: This has been extended until April 20, 2018 at Noon for the College of Engineering Admitted Students Category only. You may participate in one or all ten of our competitive entry areas.

NEW! College of Engineering Admitted Student Category

We are pleased to offer a category for all College of Engineering students attending the Admitted Student Preview day on Saturday, April 21, 2018.  Please register your project at the link below.  Deadline extended to April 20, 2018 at Noon.

Projects submitted by admitted students will be considered in a separate category from UW students. The winning submission from an admitted student will be selected by the Dean and Associate Dean and will be awarded a $500 scholarship.  All individuals choosing to enter their project will also be invited to our awards ceremony and reception that evening located in the Maple Hall Great Room.  Additionally, all individuals will be asked to display their project during the lunch break for the Dean and Associate Dean to judge in the HUB on Saturday, April 21st.

Details and Important Information

Projects will be displayed throughout the Husky Union Building (HUB) Mainstreet from 10:30 am – 1:30 pm. Projects submitted will be automatically entered into a contest where a panel of judges will vote for the grand prize winner in each of the categories. Each winner will receive a $500 gift card and a trophy (UW students) or a $200 gift card and a  trophy (non-UW students).  Please note that film entries will be shown at the Maker Summit Film Festival on Friday, April 20, 2018 at 7:00pm in Alder Hall Auditorium.

We require all gizmo entries to be accompanied during the judging panel for the event.  We strongly recommend all others be present during the judging period (12:00 pm – 1:30 pm) in case there are any questions and to engage with attendees wishing to see your work.  There will be speaking engagements and conference style presentation and talks throughout the day and we highly recommend you participate in the full event.  All accepted entries will be invited to a private reception and awards ceremony at 5:00 pm on April 21, 2018 in the Area 01 Great Room.

Project categories

Art: Drawing & Painting, Fabric Arts, Ceramics and Glass
Your masterpiece can be made of anything from paint, glass, fabric, ceramic, electronics, or any combination of different techniques, materials and disciplines.  We’ve divided our art category into three distinctive areas to allow for more creativity and varietyof submissions – but best of all, that means we’re giving away more prizes too!

Gizmos: Undergraduate, Graduate
All electronic gizmos are welcome: flying, driving, running, walking, to name a few examples. Contestants can work as individuals or teams.  This category is split between graduate and undergraduates to allow for a more even competitive field.

Digital Art: Photography, Graphic Design, 3D and Laser Print
We want to see how you view the world—whether it is the UW campus, Seattle, or somewhere halfway across the world! Submissions have #nofilter—as long as they’re 100% yours!  NOTE: We require all photography entries to be pre-printed and delivered to Area 01 by Noon on April 19, 2018.  There is not requirement on size, but we highly recommend at least 8 x 10 in.  Please do not frame your photographs.

Film: Short Film, Music Video
Films can be any genre. Whether you want to make a comedy, a horror story, or a short documentary, we want to see it!  All films are limited to four minutes in length. We reserve the right to reject any film that is inappropriate or does not meet the quality standard of our event after our review.  Films should be submitted to the Area 01 by 1:00pm on April 9, 2018 for review.  We require all films to be uploaded to YouTube.

Be a featured speaker

If you are interested in speaking at this event, we’re looking for individuals willing to commit to a 20–40 minute presentation on our central stage. Speakers can present on various topics from a personal interest, professional research, or even a great idea!
