Career kickstart: students visit the big apple

Last fall, eight eager students majoring in Communication traveled to New York City to learn about different career paths and expand their professional networks through Career Exploration, a program organized by the UW Department of Communication. From Nov. 6-8, participating students met with leading professionals (many of whom are UW Communication alumni) at Facebook, VICE News, Marie Claire, Deutsch advertising agency and more.

Career Exploration is one of five programs designed to prepare students for life after college that UW Communication offers under the umbrella of “Career Kickstart.”  In addition to serving students, Career Kickstart also functions as a site for UW Communication alumni to learn more and be inspired to give their own careers a boost.

This trip marked the second time students visited New York to meet with alumni in their professional settings. The department also organizes similar trips to Los Angeles as well as day trips to Seattle-based companies. All of the Career Exploration experiences are tailored to students’ interests and questions and are built with the leadership of alumni.

To be considered for the travel program, students apply and go through an interview process. Approximately eight students are selected for each trip.

Several New York-area alumni were integral to the success of the November trip. Tinamarie Feil, ’84, co-founder and president of client services at BMC Group, hosted a networking event in her home that was the perfect ending to a day full of visits with the following alumni mentors:

Richard Greene ’78, SVP, Citigroup, Global Public Affairs

Brendan Hagerty ’04, Director of Individual & Corporate Giving, Harlem RBI

Keegan Hamilton ’07, Evening and Weekend Editor, VICE News at VICE Media

Jessica Heinmiller ’13, Integrated Marketing Coordinator, Teen Vogue

Alicia Lee ’09, Career Resources Counselor, NYU Stern School of Business

Meghan Peters ’08, Strategic Partnerships, Journalists at Facebook

Emily Shepodd ’12, Licensed Real Estate Salesperson, The Corcoran Group

Kayla Webley ’07, Senior Editor, Features Marie Claire

John Werner ’59, President, Green Sheet Communications, Inc.
