Please join us in welcoming Sheryl Stiefel, who joined UW Libraries as director for advancement in February.

Sheryl values education! She is the first woman in her family to graduate from high school and go on to college and graduate school. She comes to UW with more than 25 years of experience as a nonprofit executive and community volunteer; in that time, Sheryl has worked with biomedical research centers, hospitals, museums, primary and secondary schools, and universities.

Sheryl began her career as an archaeologist in the American Southwest, Kenya and British Columbia. From 1983 to 1998, she was intimately involved with collections, exhibitions, and education programs at Seattle’s Museum of History and Industry, serving as deputy director and chief curator from 1986 to 1998. Subsequently, Sheryl moved into health care and biomedical research philanthropy at Overlake Hospital, Pacific Northwest Diabetes Research Institute, Virginia Mason and Benaroya Research Institute; most recently, she served as chief philanthropy officer at Bastyr University.

Her community involvement includes serving on the board of Washington State History Museum (Tacoma) and the Recombinant DNA Research Committee at the Veterans Administration. Sheryl is a past board member and Volunteer of the Year (2011) for Komen for the Cure Puget Sound. Sheryl received a BA in Anthropology from Pitzer College in Claremont, California, and and MA in Anthropology from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
