Houseplants 101

Learn the do’s and don’ts of indoor plants in this workshop that brings students and alumni together. Are you a first-time plant owner? Are you looking to expand your knowledge of your existing collection? Instructor Tassy de Give discusses how to choose the right plant for your indoor environment. Gain know-how and guidance for improving the life of your plants, including environmental factors, plant identification, general care techniques and troubleshooting potential plant problems.
The class will include an instructional talk, a hands-on plant potting activity and ample time for Q&A. Be sure to bring any plant questions or pictures of plants you want identified. Attendees will leave with a new succulent or foliage plant to care for!

Meet the Instructor
Tassy de Give
Plant Director, Glasswing Greenhouse
Tassy de Give is a plant enthusiast and instructor who has worked in the horticulture field for the past 15 years. In 2007 she co-founded Sprout Home, a home and garden shop and design studio in Brooklyn, NY. She co-authored “Rooted in Design,” her first book, in 2015. Tassy has been a featured guest/writer for ABC’s “The Chew,” “Martha Stewart Living Radio” and Elle Magazine. She is currently the Plant Director for Glasswing Greenhouse in Seattle, WA and a regular instructor for UW Botanic Gardens.

Detailed COVID-19 Information
(Updated 1/7/2021) The safety of our participants, volunteers and community members is of utmost concern. Following guidance from the UW, this event is requiring all participants to provide proof of vaccination or proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of the event. You will be asked to show this proof when you arrive at the event. Face coverings will be required for all attendees, both indoors and outdoors. Likewise, our staff and volunteers will be vaccinated and masked.
Fully-vaccinated Registrants
Registrants vaccinated against COVID-19 by a two-dose CDC- or WHO-authorized mRNA vaccine (such as Moderna and Pfizer), or a single-dose vaccine (such as Johnson & Johnson), are considered “fully vaccinated” two weeks after the final dose of the vaccine (the second dose for a two-dose regimen, or the single dose for a single-dose regimen). Documentation of vaccination status must be shown to the UWAA representative upon arrival at the Center for Urban Horticulture.
The following are acceptable as proof of full vaccination:
- CDC COVID-19 vaccine record card or photo of vaccine card.
- Printed certificate or QR code (available at the end of September) from MyIRMobile.com.
- Other official immunization record from within or outside the U.S., including from your health care provider. A photo or photocopy of this card is also acceptable.
- No ID is needed with your vaccination card/negative test.
Self-reported vaccination records that are not verified by a health care provider cannot be accepted.
Unvaccinated Registrants
Registrants unable to be vaccinated, including children under 5 and people with a medical or religious exemption, will be required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of the event. Tests may be taken no earlier than 7 p.m. on Sun. Feb. 13.
Results from PCR tests as well as antigen (a.k.a “rapid”) tests that have been administered by a testing provider, will be accepted. Rapid tests used without the supervision of a testing provider (e.g., self-administered over the counter tests, or home tests) cannot be accepted.
The following are acceptable as proof of a negative COVID-19 test result:
- Printed document (from test provider or laboratory) OR
- An email or text message displayed on a phone or electronic device from the test provider or laboratory.
The information provided should include the name of the person tested, the type of test result performed, and the date of the negative test result.
