History Lecture Series

Beyond and Within the Cuban Revolution

Wed. Feb. 8, 2017      7:30 – 9 p.m.

Kane Hall 130

Ileana María Rodríguez-Silva, UW associate professor of history

After 1959, Cuba became either a symbol of popular resistance or totalitarian governance. Unfortunately, in the process Cubans became extricated from their own complex history. We examine Cuba’s multiple revolutions during the 19th and 20th centuries to illuminate the global and muddied histories of Modernity.

Admission: $5–$15 (Individual lecture); $20–$55 (series pass)

You can buy individual lecture tickets on the History Lecture Series registration page. Registration for UWAA members is open now; registration for non-members opens Dec. 12.

UW professor Ileana María Rodríguez-SilvaIleana María Rodríguez-Silva‘s research focuses on racial identity formation, post-emancipation racial politics and comparative colonial arrangements in the configuration of empires.

She is currently working on two new projects. The first is an interdisciplinary, collaborative endeavor with UW colleagues Kiko Benítez in comparative literature, Rick Bonus in American ethnic studies and English professor Chandan Reddy on the formation of modern imperial fields. The second one is a study of sexuality, consumption and middle-class formation in Puerto Rico after the colonial re-arrangement of 1950.
