FACULTY AND FRIENDS

Ricardo Aguirre, ’63, who was instrumental in the creation of the UW's Educational Opportunity Program and Office of Minority Affairs, died July 3. He was a mentor to the few Chicano students who attended the UW between 1968-72, and a longtime board member and founder of El Centro de la Raza. He was a Husky football star who won two Rose Bowls and a lecturer in the UW’s Chicano Studies Department. He was 72.

Hal Arnason Jr., ’51, a three-sport star for the Huskies who went on to become a Bellingham businessman and civic leader, died April 22. He was 81.

Franklin Ilsley Badgley, who spent 32 years as a professor in the UW Atmospheric Sciences Department, died April 28 at the age of 94.

Stimson Bullitt, ’49, a lawyer, KING-5 TV executive, and well-known activist died April 19. He was 89. His outspoken opposition to the Vietnam War earned him a prominent place on President Nixon’s “Enemies List.” In 1999, he dedicated the Stimson Bullitt Professorship at the UW School of Law.

John C. "Jack" Capell, ’49, the first meteorologist on Portland TV station KGW, died June 14. He received the first American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval in the Pacific Northwest. He was 86.

Alden "Loo" Crittenden, a UW chemistry professor from 1948–89, died April 15 at age 88.

Samuel Clark Fain, UW physics professor for 38 years, died May 26. He was 66.

Karen Johnson Freeze, history teacher at the UW, died March 19. She was 63.

Richard P. Hibbard, emeritus lecturer in the Department of Environmental Health, died May 7. He was 86.

Peter Tamas Knoepfler, clinical professor of psychiatry, died May 4. He was 80. A Holocaust survivor who was fluent in seven languages, Knoepfler came to the United States at the age of 19 and later became one of the country’s first certified sex therapists.

C. Calvert Knudsen, ’45, ’50, former Weyerhauser executive and a member of President Nixon’s transition team, died April 24. He was 85.

N. Karle Mottet, a professor of pathology who served the UW from 1961-94, died April 24. He was 85.

Greg Palmer, a former UW student who became a writer and Emmy-award winning television reporter, died May 8. He was 61.

Julian Patrick, professor emeritus of music and acclaimed baritone, died May 8. He performed leading roles with every major opera company in the U.S. He was 81.

Stan Strick, ’68, executive editor of The Herald of Everett from 1992-2007, died June 4.

Margit S. Weingarten, ’70, ’76, who established the Dr. Werner and Margit Weingarten Endowed Fund for Norwegian Studies, died April 13. She was 83.
