Journalism Group Gives Columns Seven Awards in Writing, Design and Photography

Columns won seven awards-including three First Place honors-in a 2003 journalism competition sponsored by the Western Washington chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, the society announced May 17.

Columns Associate Editor Jon Marmor, '94, won two First Place awards. One was in the Features/Personalities category for "Inside Story," a profile of ultrasound pioneer Donald Baker, '60. The other came in the Features-Sports category for "On the Ball," a profile of UW Men's Basketball Coach Lorenzo Romar.

University Photographer Mary Levin and free-lance photographers Stewart Hopkins, William Thompson and Loyd Heath shared a First Place award in the Photo Essay category for "Jewel Renewal," a series of photos of the Suzzallo Library renovation. Art Director Ken Shafer won a Third Place award in Page/Cover Design for "Jewel Renewal" and an honorable mention in the same category for "A Place Apart," the March 2002 cover story about favorite campus places.

A story on pancreatic cancer, "Fatal Inheritance," won a Second Place award in the Features-Science and Health category for free-lancer Scott Holter. UW Writer Steve Hill won an honorable mention in the Personalities category for "History Lessons," a profile of UW History Professor Richard Johnson.

In the journalism contest, Columns was competing with other consumer and trade magazines published in the Puget Sound region.

In an earlier competition sponsored by the higher education professional Organization CASE, District VIII, Shafer won a 2003 Silver Award for overall publication design and the photography team won a 2003 Bronze Award for its Suzzallo photo essay. The CASE District VIII competition covered alumni magazines in five U.S. states and six Canadian provinces.

Since its founding in 1989, Columns has won 129 awards in local, regional and national competitions.
