    Mary Marguerite Cobb, '49, '57, associate professor emeritus of psychosocial and community health, died May 10. A Spokane native, she taught at the UW from 1953-95 and was instrumental in obtaining state certification for community health.

    Talliesin "Tal" Evans Jones, '50, who served as assistant director of the UW Alumni Association under legendary alumni leader Curly Harris, died May 18. He was renowned for his work as a volunteer recruiter for the Husky football program, and received the Gold Tyee W Award for his contributions to the athletic department. He is credited with recruiting quarterback Bob Schloredt, who led the Huskies to the 1960 and 1961 Rose Bowls. He was 78.

    Robert G. Joppa, '45, '51, professor emeritus of aeronautics and astronautics, died April 16. He received both his bachelor's and master's degrees at the UW and joined the faculty as a part-time instructor and research associate in 1947. After retiring from the University in 1988, he taught at the National University of Singapore for two years. He was 79.

    John McDiarmid, professor emeritus of classics who chaired the department from 1949-1973, died April 15. He helped found both the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome and the Seattle chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America. In World War II, he was part of Canadian military forces working to break the code of Hitler's cipher device, the ENIGMA machine. He twice studied at the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., which was under the directorship of Albert Einstein the first time and under atomic-bomb physicist Robert Oppenheimer the second time. He was 88.

    Harry Dickson Patton, chair of the UW department of physiology and biophysics from 1966-83, died May 26. He and his colleagues were among the first in the world to record the electrical activity of individual cells in the spinal cord. He was also known for his research on the spinal nerve pathways responsible for muscle control. He joined the UW faculty in 1948 and retired in 1983. He was 84.

    Bayard O. Wheeler, '30, professor emeritus of business, died May 16. He worked for President Franklin Roosevelt's administration on the War Labor Board and served as a United Nations consultant to the Chinese Productivity Center in Taiwan. He taught at the UW from 1929-1972. He was 96.
