    Law Professor Emeritus Harry M. Cross, '40, died Oct. 10. He taught at the School of Law from 1943-1984. Widely recognized as an expert in community-property law, he helped develop laws still in effect today in Washington and other states affecting the way property is divided when couples divorce. He was elected NCAA president in 1969 and 1970 and was the UW representative to the NCAA from 1963-1984. He was 88.

    Robert B. Filley Jr., who helped establish and direct the Runstad Center for Real Estate Studies at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, died Oct. 16. A financier who spearheaded efforts to revitalize Bellevue Square and Seattle's Westlake Center, he was a senior lecturer in urban design and planning. He was 61.

    Charles C. Gale, professor of physiology and biophysics, died May 26. He joined the faculty in 1964 and taught until his retirement in 1982. He was 76.

    Warren T. Hill, '50, associate professor emeritus of architecture, died Oct. 27. He taught art and architecture during his 35 years on the UW faculty and directed the UW's interior design program from 1967-1983. He was 78.

    Richard Hunt Meese, '39, professor emeritus of civil engineering, died Oct. 10. He worked as a civil engineer on the Panama Canal and with the Navy's 101st Construction Battalion in the South Pacific. A nationally known expert in soils engineering, he taught at the UW from 1946-1981. He was 84. Betty Jane Narver, '73, former director of the UW's Institute for Public Policy and Management, died Dec. 9. A public policy expert who was admired for her involvement in a wide range of community issues from school funding to libraries to health care, she received the UW's Outstanding Public Service Award in 1991. Although she retired in 2000 from the public policy institute, she was involved in many projects at the Evans School of Public Affairs during her retirement. She was 67.

    Betty Jane Narver, '73, former director of the UW's Institute for Public Policy and Management, died Dec. 9. A public policy expert who was admired for her involvement in a wide range of community issues from school funding to libraries to health care, she received the UW's Outstanding Public Service Award in 1991. Although she retired in 2000 from the public policy institute, she was involved in many projects at the Evans School of Public Affairs during her retirement. She was 67.

    Walter Lee Riley, '57, associate professor emeritus of political science and associate dean emeritus of the College of Arts and Sciences, died Nov. 16. He taught and served as an administrator at the UW during his 30-year career. He was 89.

    Bert E. Rose Jr., '41, a former UW athletic department official who went on to a distinguished career with several NFL teams, died Oct. 14. Rose, former assistant athletic director for sports publicity at the UW, was director of publicity for the L.A. Rams, the first general manager of the Minnesota Vikings, executive VP and GM of the New Orleans Saints, an executive at NFL headquarters, and manager of Texas Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. When the Vikings became a franchise, Rose decided to match their colors to those of his alma mater. He was 82.

    Julia Goodsell Skahen, '26, '28, associate professor emeritus of biological structure and of physiology and biophysics, died Sept. 3. She also taught nursing and physical education during her career on the UW faculty from 1928-1974. She was 96.

    Donald Eugene Strandness, '54, '62, longtime chair of the Dept. of Vascular Surgery at the School of Medicine, died Jan. 7, 2002. A North Dakota native, he joined the faculty in 1962 and was well known for his research in peripheral vascular disease and the use of non-invasive diagnostic techniques. He retired in 1995. He was 73.

    John Fredrick Streib, professor emeritus of physics, died Oct. 5. After earning two degrees from Caltech, he joined the faculty in 1947 and taught until his retirement in 1980. He was 86. Arnold Tamarin, '60, professor emeritus of oral biology, died June 27. He did research in oral pathology and anatomy and taught from 1961 until his retirement in 1989. He was 88.
