My journey at UW has been about exploration and has opened my eyes to the vast amount of ways I can be involved in my local community. These experiences have encouraged me to question what I want to do after graduation multiple times. Ultimately, this journey has helped me discover my passions and provided me with the confidence to use my voice to advocate for public health policy reform, increased funding for education, and sexual assault awareness in the Greek Community.

UW Bothell created an atmosphere for students like me who want to explore our cultures and educate others about them. My Husky Experience challenged me to work toward eliminating the barriers that marginalized identities experience, especially in healthcare, and to serve others by working with people from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Being a dentist is how I will contribute to the health field, and right now, I am proud to help students similar to me that just want to make a difference in their communities.

Work hard with honesty, integrity, and care so deeply for people that every day you can change the world. I believe that this mission didn’t just happen once upon a time and doesn’t just wait patiently for us in the future. It begins every day with a conscious choice to serve those around us in the capacity that we can. By designing with the people, for the people, it continues to transform who I am and bring value to this Husky journey.

The UW provided me the opportunity to learn UX design, a field that gives me the skills to connect with and understand the perspectives of widely diverse groups. My design abilities have grown through working in Human Centered Design & Engineering-directed research groups, interning at DirecTV and Hulu, participating in local design challenges, and re-designing UW student tools at UW IT. I’m looking forward to continuing my design experience by identifying sociotechnical problems in the world and designing tools to solve them.

My Husky Experience has focused on improving the design and implementation of clean energy materials, access to clean energy solutions for developing or at-risk communities, and the student-workforce transition at the UW. These formative experiences have come from my research projects at the UW, from work with the UW on understanding the potential impact of solar energy as emergency power generators after natural disasters, and as a leader for the student group Diversity In Clean Energy (DICE).

I was drawn to the University of Washington School of Medicine for its emphasis on improving rural health and strengthening Idaho communities. Our training is not simply to diagnose and treat patients to the highest standard, but to be community leaders that improve the lives of our patients, both inside and outside the clinic. Through advocacy and community engagement, I am striving to create a system that addresses the health care needs of every Idahoan.

As a proud Mexican American from Texas, I strive to show those I am helping the same supportive, understanding, and caring aspects that many El Pasoans hold within their hearts. My time at the University of Washington has taught me how to be an advocate for the underrepresented communities that I am from, work alongside, or want to help, as well as a supportive ally for those in need. I would not be here without my friends, family, teachers, and classmates from Texas to the University of Washington.

I have had a very unexpected Husky Experience. While I was here at the University of Washington, I planned to study environmental studies and dance. But, through many volunteer opportunities and classes on education, I found myself increasingly invested in education as it affects the lives of marginalized communities. Reflecting on my own educational trials, hardships, and relating to the experiences of others has led me to continue to pursue education as a graduate student!

Having been exposed to STEM at a young age, I actively promote STEM education in underserved communities as president of the SPACE registered student organization and by volunteering with Northwest Earth and Space Sciences Pipeline (NESSP). I aspire to work in the commercial space industry and advance technology to make research in space more accessible.
