Shift Break Premium

(Nurses only)

Premium paid to Registered Nurses for work hours that infringe on rest period between shifts.

Registered Nurses covered by the UW/WSNA UWMC RN Contract (refer to Article 7.10) who work a scheduled shift that is less than 12 hours qualify to receive shift break premium if they do not receive 12 hours rest between the time they stop working and the beginning of the next scheduled shift.

Registered Nurses who work 12 hour shifts qualify to receive shift break premium if they do not receive 10.5 hours rest between the time they stop working and the beginning of the next scheduled shift.

Registered Nurses covered by the UW/SEIU 1199 Contract (refer to Article 7.9) who work a scheduled shift that is less than 10 hours qualify to receive shift break premium if they do not receive 12 hours rest between the time they stop working and the beginning of the next scheduled shift.

Registered Nurses who work 10 or 12 hour shifts qualify to receive shift break premium if they do not receive 10.5 hours rest between the time they stop working and the beginning of the next scheduled shift.

Eligible hours x .5 hourly rate equivalent up to a maximum of 8 hours.

NOTE: In multiple premium pay situations, each premium is applied separately and only once to the work hours and in descending sequence:

  1. holiday/premium,
  2. overtime at 1.5 rate,
  3. double time (Registered Nurse 1, 2, 3 base rate only),
  4. 3rd weekend,
  5. shift break.

Time and one-half cannot be applied more than once to the same hours.
