How long is the Alene Moris NEW Leadership Institute?

The program runs six days, Monday thru Saturday.

Where is the Institute located?

The University of Washington Seattle campus is home to the six-day Institute with one held off campus. The Women’s Center works with participants who live outside the Seattle area to provide housing during the program.

Who is eligible?

Any undergraduate or graduate student enrolled in any Washington State college or university and to Washington State residents enrolled in out-of-state institutions. Students graduating in the spring and graduate students entering the following fall quarter are eligible.

The Institute seeks a diverse cohort and encourages students from a variety of backgrounds, fields of study, and interests to apply. Non-traditional students are encouraged to join. Our participant’s ages range from 19 to 50 with majors as diverse as Music, Engineering, Journalism, Neuroscience, Spanish, Business, Anthropology, and Nursing.

How much does it cost?

There is a $150.00 administrative fee for students accepted for admission. Students are encouraged to seek funding through their program and/or department within their institution. A limited number of scholarships through the Women’s Center are available. To apply for a scholarship or housing, please submit the supplemental the Scholarship and Housing Application* along with the general application. Those accepted to the program will receive notification of their scholarship or housing award.

Can I nominate someone to apply?

If you know a student who you feel would benefit from the NEW Leadership program, please complete the nomination form. Nominated candidates will receive information on how to apply to the program.

What can participants expect to gain?

Participating in the Alene Moris National Education for Women’s Leadership Institute is a time to:

  • Learn to make a difference through civic engagement and political participation
  • Learn to address real social problems in society
  • Cultivate professional development, leadership skills, and self-confidence
  • Create a community of emergent and established leaders!

What are the expectations for students who participate in the Institute?

NEW Leadership Institute participants must agree to attend the entire six-day program, including all scheduled events and meals. Typically, the day begins at 8:00 am and ends at 8:00 pm. Students are expected to remain on site at the Institute location for the duration of each day’s activities.
