Never heard of a Birthday Bag Blitz? Neither had I, until I was introduced to Cheerful Givers. Cheerful Givers is a nonprofit organization that provides birthday gift bags to disadvantaged children. At a Birthday Bag Blitz, volunteers get together to create gift bags filled with toys. The birthday bags are then distributed to local food shelves and shelters so that parents living in poverty can give their child a birthday gift.

Last February, The Whole U and the UW Combined Fund Drive organized a Cheerful Givers Birthday Bag Blitz, where UW Faculty and Staff got together to brighten birthdays for children in need. We raised over $1,000 to cover the cost of supplies and toys, and were able to put together 144 birthday bags. We donated the bags to the University District Food Bank, which has been distributing them to families in need in our local community.

The event was so popular that we decided to host another Birthday Bag Blitz this fall. This time, we’ve made it our goal to fill 200 bags! Help us bring smiles and the joy of being remembered to 200 kids. This is not only a wonderful hands-on volunteering opportunity but also a great team building activity. You will have fun, make new friends, and you’ll definitely leave with a smile on your face.

October 23rd is a Friday, not a Wed., so which day is this event really happening? (In Sept. the 23rd fell on a Wed.; maybe someone needs to turn the page on their calendar.)
