Streaming Media, Video, & TV Technologies
Streaming Media, Video & TV Technologies (SMVTT) provide video production, satellite downlinking, streaming media and traditional cable and satellite television distribution services for the UW community and the ResearchChannel consortium. SMVTT staff create collaborative applications in support of eScience activities, pioneer new avenues of media distribution on the Web, and offer consulting engineering to design advanced spatial communication systems. They develop and integrate technology and techniques for distributing high-quality video over the Internet in support of the UW-led ResearchChannel international consortium and the iHDTV™ project.
SMVTT includes:
- UWTV: Offering original, non-commercial educational programs in health and medicine, science, technology, and social issues. Presented by UW colleges and departments to showcase the university’s outstanding research, programs, faculty, and visiting speakers. Available to cable television viewers across Washington state (channel 27 in Seattle and King County), to satellite television subscribers nationwide, and as streaming video and video on demand around the world at www.uwtv.org.
- uw2.tv: Educational cable channel 76 in Seattle and King County with webcasts also available to watch online. Features NASA mission and launch coverage and programs from ResearchChannel.
- ResearchChannel: Housed at the University of Washington, ResearchChannel offers technology, science, arts, and humanities video programming through online, on-air, and on-demand distribution formats, and new media platforms. Founded as a way to share breakthrough research with the public, the ResearchChannel consortium includes world-renowned universities and research institutions, including UW, that provide programming.
- UWTV Production: An award-winning television production facility located on the University of Washington campus. Professional production staff help UW reach its target audience, whether on campus, across the state, or around the world, from broadcast television productions to live webcasts.
