A Thousand Years of Czech Culture
Riches from the National Museum in Prague

Vladimir Brych et al.

Throughout history, the Czech lands--traditionally defined as Bohemia, Moravia, and parts of Silesia--have been at the crossroads of Europe. A Thousand Years of Czech Culture presents their cultural history on a scale never before offered by an American publication. Each of the 212 objects featured here represents a major artistic or cultural achievement or an important historical milestone. In many ways, these works of art and artifacts both highlight the distinctive contribution of Czech culture and reflect the broader European climate that shaped it.

Ten essays by leading Czech scholars provide an overview of the artistic, historical, and religious trends at work in the Czech lands: the evolution of royalty and the Czech state, the religious conflicts that presaged the Protestant Reformation, the power and artistic impact of the Catholic Church from the Middle Ages to the baroque, and the rise of nationalism in the 19th century.

A Thousand Years of Czech Culture is a stimulating and memorable look at a rich legacy of material culture and the movements and events that have shaped Czech history and life.
