On American Soil a focus in Milwaukee
A Milwaukee celebration remembered Booker Townsell, featured in On
American Soil, on January 18, 2008 and united family, friends,
Army officials, and author Jack Hamann. More than 20 years after Townsell’s
death, the Army offered his family an apology for his conviction in 1946
for involvement in the lynching of an Italian prisoner of war at Seattle’s
Fort Lawton. This conviction has since been overruled by the Army’s Board
of Review.
Milwaukee’s press provided strong coverage for the event, including a
story in the Milwaukee
Journal-Sentinel, an interview with Hamann on Wisconsin Public Radio,
and an AP story.
