Communications Specialist

UW-IT’s Academic & Collaborative Applications (ACA) unit seeks a Communications Specialist to create procedural and conceptual help content that will support the use of Microsoft products (such as Office 365 and SharePoint) by members of the UW community. Audiences of these materials will include end users (UW students, instructors, staff) and and technical support staff.

ACA advances teaching, learning and research by investigating computing trends and identifying user needs in order to implement and support the latest technology solutions for collaboration, teaching, learning and research. ACA emphasizes collaboration, teamwork, and innovation in a light-hearted environment.

The Communications Specialist will develop, write, and edit technical content for web and print materials, including product descriptions, technology guides, and how-to documentation, for use by both technical and non-technical audiences. The Communications Specialist will research appropriate sources in order to create or update documentation. The Communications Specialist will collaborate with product teams in order to plan documentation.

This position requires collaboration with UW-IT Web developers, user experience designers, software engineers, and project managers. The Communications Specialist should be able to understand technical information and be able to write content based on this information that can be understood by a general audience and experts alike. The successful candidate will work alone and collaboratively, as part of the larger ACA team and with associated University faculty, staff, and partners, taking the lead as projects or initiatives demand it.

Typical duties and responsibilities

  • Develop and write content including documentation, examples, how-tos, best practices, profiles, tutorials, case studies, other product related documentation and promotional materials.
  • Edit technical content to improve clarity and usability.
  • Work with subject matter experts to develop use cases and technical documentation.
  • Proofread content for print and online publication.
  • Proactively inform the Project Manager about project status, issues or concerns.
  • Manage document release process.

Criteria for selection

  • MA in Education, Informatics, CSE or any related field with 1 to 3 years of job related experience.
  • Genuine interest in technical communications.
  • Excellent  written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good technical aptitude.
  • Proven ability to work well as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrable competence with Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to work with busy people to establish and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills.
  • Keen eye for detail.

Desired experience

Experience with:

  • Content Management Systems.
  • HTML and other web languages.
  • Working in an agile software development process.
  • Working in higher education environment.
  • writing technical documentation for end users. Demonstrable understanding of technical writing standards and how to write instructions for a range of audiences.
  • Following and developing style guides.

Familiarity with:

  • UW systems, policies, and academic programs.
  • Collaboration applications and Office 365.

A satisfactory outcome from a criminal background verification will be required prior to hire.

The job is part time, up to 19.5 hours per week. Pay is depending upon experience.
