(This is a two-quarter seminar: Winter and Spring 2010)
LTP encourages students to find their voice through photographs and written text. Photography as a medium of communication is particularly accessible to children. The students photograph scenes from their lives and these images become the catalyst for subsequent written investigation of self, community, family, and dreams. Students represent themselves with photographs and words while increasing their means of expression.
UW students will explore the principles and practice of LTP themselves during the seminar and facilitate the curriculum in an elementary classroom at John Rogers Elementary.
During the Winter Quarter, we will explore the themes of self and my community. By the end of the quarter, we will identify a service learning project within the community we have defined and devise an action plan for spring quarter. This Spring Quarter service learning project will be reciprocal in nature and focus on youth voice as a key element. LTP will be the lens that we use throughout the project to capture the thoughts, images and reflections of the students that are involved.
There are a limited number of spaces available for this program. For questions about this seminar and placements, contact Christine Stickler at castick@u.washington.edu.
