Teachers Without Borders Spring Quarter 2010 Seminar:
English Language Learning and Bilingual Education
Over the last few decades, the global migration of vast numbers of people and communities as well as the globalization of goods, ideas, and technologies have dramatically changed the political, economic, and social landscape at every corner of the globe. In the field of education, the effective and equitable language teaching of immigrant children and adults has become more and more important. The methods and theories of teaching English language learners (ELL) is often politicized, yet not well understood to the general public. In this Teachers Without Borders seminar, we will look at the research on best practice in ELL/bilingual education, discuss the socio-political and socio-cultural implications of research, policy, and practice, and volunteer in local ELL/bilingual classrooms. If you are interested in getting involved in this important social movement, this is a great introductory seminar for you!
