25: The Impact of the Cold War on Washington:
The 1962 Seattle World's Fair
Bell Systems Exhibit

In its press release for this Century 21 photograph, officials from the Bell System laboratories wrote the following: "A full-sized model of the United State's first satellite, Vanguard I, is a part of the Bell System exhibit.... Hostess, Linda Colwell explains how two Bell laboratories inventions -- solar batteries and transistors -- contributed to Vanguard I's success. The satellite's dependable voice -- still operating more than 4 years after it was placed in orbit -- is expected to continue through its estimated lifetime of some 200 years."
