Bremerton Naval Shipyard

World War II in the Puget Sound region began in 1940, when President Roosevelt issued an order to place in readiness all military bases in the country. The Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, shown here in 1932, was one of the first to benefit from the order. Following the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941, the damaged Pacific fleet destroyers were returned to this Bremerton facility for repair and modernization.
