Document 16: Seattle Argus, September 25, 1897.

Outfits are for sale all along the trail from Skaguay to Lake Bennett, scores of disgusted men having turned back in despair. Of the three thousand or more who are or have been attempting to get in by way of this pass, not more than one hundred or two hundred will succeed, in my judgment. The rest will winter at the lake or at some favorable place along the trail, to go in in the spring or go back home to try no more.
