UW Emergency Management
Animals
Research and companion animals
Over 200,000 research animals are located in research facilities throughout the Seattle campus. Animals used in research include: fish, mice, rats, dogs, rabbits, chickens, frogs, and non-human primates. The number of companion or service animals present on campus is not known. Recommendations:
- Strengthen the evacuation and recovery areas of emergency policy for research animals
- Include research animals in emergency drills
- Incorporate the animal census into the map of campus hazards
- Investigate the possibility of implementing a real-time location assessment system using global positioning sensors
