  • UWICK Starter Set diskette maker included on CD in \EXTRAS\DISKIMG
Bug Fixes:
Internet Explorer now installs Internet Connection Wizard as some systems expect it.
Starter Set installs and registers 32 bit OLE components instead of loading them from CD. This fixes some potential registry problems in NT. It should also help with systems that have corrupt OLE components.
Current Bugs:
On a small number of Windows 98 machines with AOL system software installed, UW Dial-up Internet fails with error code 645. This is caused by incompatability between the "AOL Adapter" and Microsoft's "Dial-Up Adapter". Workaround is to uninstall AOL, install UWICK, then reinstall AOL if desired. On some systems, merely restarting UW Dial-up Internet is sufficent to clear up the problem.

Autumn 1998

Code and behavior changes:
  • PC-Pine for Windows 95/98/NT added to kit - version 4.03

Internet Explorer components are now signed.
Ethernet installation is not needed in Windows 98 and is disabled.
Extra Stuff components tested against Windows 98.
Current Bugs:
On a small number of Windows 98 machines, UWICK splash screen will not start. Usually due to corrupt or out of date system .DLLs.
In NT or 95/98 using multiple user profiles, IE will not start on some systems for users besides the one that installed the UWICK. Workaround is to manually set the Internet Control Panel connection properties for each user, or install the Internet Connection Wizard. To install the ICW, run IE (as the user that can) and select Help...Product Updates.

    --UW Dial-up Internet
This is an Internet connection manager for Windows 95/98/NT. It replaces the multiple DUN connection from past starter sets. It will auto install in 95/98/NT 4.0. If system components are needed, they will be installed the first time UW Dial-up Internet is launched.
UW Dial-up Internet integrates with the Windows OS and Windows applications that use demand-dial Internet connections.
Demand-dialing in the OS can be set under the Internet control panel. This is not done by default to allow for multiple Internet service provider situations.
    --CRT Telnet 2.0
This 32-bit telnet application replaces EWAN Telnet.
    --WS_FTP LE 32-bit
This 32-bit FTP application replaces WS_FTP.

  • Homer and Dante links in UWICK Applications group now called "Staff-Faculty email (Homer)" and "Student email (Dante)"
  • 32-bit Starter Set components can be uninstalled: WS_FTP has an icon in the UWICK Application group; the others are removed from the Add/Remove Programs control panel
  • Dr Solomon AVTK and Magic Bullet updated to 7.84
  • Numerous help text changes related to the new software
  • UW Staff/Student combined directory added to Outlook Express
Bug Fixes:
Dial-up Networking Icon replaced on desktop by UW Dial-up Internet. (Which can be removed by uninstalling it.)
Current Bugs:
Internet Explorer Authenticode signatures are not valid. This can cause a problem when IE tries to install Java classes near the end of its install procedure. This is a non-fatal error. Classes will be downloaded when needed by Java apps.
Ethernet installation code not tested against Windows 98.
Extra Stuff components not tested against Windows 98.
