Installing SPSS 16 for the Macintosh at the UW


To install SPSS for the Macintosh you need to be logged in to the Macintosh using an account that has "administrator" privilege, or have such an account and password available.  Your Macintosh will need an active Internet connection to complete the licensing process. SPSS 16 for the Macintosh is distributed on CD-ROM. When you insert the "Installation" CD and open it (by double-clicking) you should see something similar to the image below.



  1. Begin the installation by double-clicking the "SPSS Installer" program/icon. You should soon see a dialog similar to the image below.



  2. You will need to provide the password (or name AND password) for an account on the Macintosh with "administrator" privilege. Fill in the "Name" and "Password" fields and click "OK" to proceed to the next dialog, as shown below.



  3. Select "Site license" and click "Continue" to proceed to the next dialog, as shown below.




  4. Read the license terms and click the "I accept" option then click "Continue" to proceed to the next dialog, as shown below.



  5. Click "Continue" to proceed to the next dialog, as shown below.



  6. Enter your name as the "User Name" and "University of Washington" as the "Organization". The "Serial Number" may be left blank (because this is being installed under a site license). Click "Continue" to proceed to the next dialog, as shown below.



  7. Accept the default "Directory Name", click "Continue" to proceed to the next dialog, as shown below.



  8. This screen is just informational, click "Install" to start the installation itself. This will run for some time and then present the next dialog, as shown below.



  9. (Assuming your Mac has a working Internet connection) select the option to register and click "OK" to proceed.



  10. Select the option to "License my product now" and click "Next" to proceed.



  11. When you see this "Overview" screen, click "Next" to proceed.



  12. Here you MUST enter the correct activation key, consult your documentation and type carefully. Click "Next" to proceed.



  13. Select the option to use your Internet connection to transmit the activation code and register SPSS, click "Next" to proceed.




  14. Upon successful authorization you will see something similar to the image above, click "Next" to proceed.



  15. SPSS for the Mac has been successfully installed and licensed, click "Finish".  The next time you start SPSS you should not be prompted for licensing information.
