HR and Payroll Process Improvement Team (PIT)
The Process Improvement Team (PIT)
is charged with the day-to-day leadership of the Initiative, ensuring
that end-user involvement is the single driving force of each stage
of product development. At the early stages of the HR and Payroll
Initiative, after collecting input from end-users to determine which
products would be most helpful to the University community, the
PIT prioritized which products the teams would tackle first.
HR and Payroll USER Task Groups (UTGs)
The USER Task Groups work with our Application
Developers to determine the look and feel of USER software products.
All team members are volunteers who represent a broad range of end-users,
with first hand knowledge of the process to be improved.
HR and Payroll Initiative Staff
The HR and Payroll Initiative Staff
provide training to the USER Task Groups about the USER philosophy,
and assist team leaders with facilitation techniques. The staff
also provides administrative support such as compiling feedback
data, conducting surveys, recruiting volunteers for product testing,
and securing meeting rooms and technical equipment for product demonstrations.
Technology Teams
Application
Development Team members work with the USER Task Groups to create
new user-centered applications. The team also provides application
infrastructure support for USER software products after implementation.
The Technology Infrastructure
Team designs and supports UW's network computing and communications
infrastructure, and provides systems programming and database administration
for the computers and servers that support UW administrative applications,
including USER products.

HR and Payroll Sponsors
To carry out its mission to “transform University of Washington
support services”, the HR and Payroll USER Project needed
the active support and guidance of influential sponsors. Weldon
Ihrig, Executive
Vice-President; Ed Lightfoot, Director of Information
Systems; and V'Ella Warren, Vice President of Financial
Management and Treasurer, Board
of Regents wrote the proposal to obtain project funding and
established the overall approach to change. They championed key
principles that established the project's vision and direction and
continue to provide ongoing leadership, joined by the Human Resources
Vice President who came on after the project started.
University Leadership
The USER Steering Committee
was instrumental in making the USER Project a success. The Committee
set the vision, helped develop the USER approach and guidelines,
and provided strategic support and guidance to the Project.
In the Fall of 2003, the USER Steering Committee moved into an
expanded role when its membership was appointed to the newly formed
Information
Technology Advisory Committee (I-TAC). The I-TAC is chaired
by Weldon Ihrig, Executive Vice President, and helps prioritize
and plan the technology and strategic direction of the University
of Washington. With the formation of the I-TAC, there was no longer
a need for a separate Steering Committee for the USER Project.
