User-Centered Design in OIM

Usability lab

C&C's usability lab is located located on the main campus at Mary Gates Hall. The lab consists of two adjacent rooms: a test room and an observation room.

The Usability Test Room (MGH 015N)

Here is where many usability studies are run. Typically, each participant is scheduled for an individual session. The participant tries out new software or a software simulation while providing us feedback and comments. Nearby, a usability specialist takes notes and keeps the session moving along. The studies are videotaped and transmitted live to the adjacent observation room. The captured images are generally of the participant's computer screen or the current page of a paper simulation.

The Observation Room (MGH 015M)

Next door to the usability lab is a conference room with a 52" projection TV with a direct video feed from ongoing usability studies.

Observe and discuss usability studies in progress!

Developers, designers, and others associated with a project can watch a usability study session live in the observation room. Many teams find it useful to talk about the participant's experience as it is happening. Videotapes of the sessions are also available for later viewing.
