Third-year resident Dr. Chinonyeram (Chino) Okoro has been elected to the leadership board of the University of Washington Network of Underrepresented Residents and Fellows (NURF) as social media chair for the 2017-2018 academic year.

NURF seeks to promote cultural diversity in medicine through community involvement, mentorship, professional networking, and recruitment of underrepresented minorities in medicine. The NURF community is comprised of a multicultural community representing physicians from all medical specialties.

As chair of social media outreach, Dr. Okoro will facilitate messaging and outreach for the organization’s various events and activities. NURF hosts several social, networking, and community outreach events each year, many intended to introduce young men and women in minority communities to the field of medicine.

The Department of Urology has played a pivotal role in NURF’s outreach and activities over the past year, with two of the four board position occupied by our residents: Dr. Shannon Cannon served as President of the group, while Dr. Justin Ahn served as Vice-President, for the 2016-2017 academic year. Together, they implemented a variety of initiatives and events offering networking, training, and mentorship opportunities to residents, fellows, and faculty in all specialty areas of UW Medicine.

“As NURF VP, I enjoyed meeting and networking with both faculty and resident members of the GME community, outside the Urology department,” said Dr. Ahn.

He continues, “Shannon Cannon, our president, laid out an excellent calendar for the year. Working under her we further developed our organizational and leadership skills, planning and conducting educational seminars, town hall forums, social events, diversity recruitment, and student outreach.”

Drs. Cannon and Ahn attribute their success with NURF’s programming last year to an excellent team of residents, fellows, faculty, and administrators – many of whom remain involved with NURF this year.
