As early as the fourth week, students
began recording electrical responses from inside a
cell. These electrical responses span a
wide range from repetitive all-or-none action
potentials to the small electrical signals
generated by a single active synapse in the
act of transferring information from cell to
cell.
One student illustrated the concept
of threshold with this recording.
Threshold and resting potential are among the
essential ideas in the course that become immeasurably clearer
as students explore them in the laboratory.
