Academic Advising Mission & Values Statement

A key project of the Undergraduate Academic Advising Council (UAAC) has been the creation of an advising mission and values statement. Developed in consultation with academic advisers across campus, much time, thought and hard work has been spent considering how the work of advising can best serve our students and our university mission. The result, outlined in two documents, is the product of this commitment to quality education.

The first document is the Undergraduate Academic Advising Mission & Values Statement. This document articulates the vision and values for the undergraduate academic advising endeavor. The circular model represents what we know to be the interplay between dynamic pieces of our work with students. Each articulated value offers a deeper look at the way in which advising affects the student experience. This vision has the potential to create a cohesive model for advising across disciplines and colleges.

The second document which delineates goals and outcomes is a more distinct roadmap for how the university might influence the advising experience at each level—from the institution to the individual student. It articulates more specifically how each level plays a role in moving our institution toward a better quality advising program. Many efforts outlined are already in place, while in some areas we need a stronger commitment of resources.

Both of the documents represent an ‘ideal’ state. We invite you to work with your colleagues, chairs and directors to review the plans outlined within these documents and discuss how you might bring your programs and services into alignment with the vision described. Recognizing that each college and unit must pursue multiple priorities and commitments, it may not be possible to execute the entire plan; however, giving some consideration to each may serve to move the collective in a positive direction. Provost Wise has reviewed the vision and values and is supportive of the direction that we have identified. We anticipate that this process will be revisited through periodic progress checks and dialogue. This is the beginning of that process.
