What you wish you knew then, that you know
now as a faculty member:
Investing unlimited time in a task, typically does not yield the best results.
What three steps do you take to prepare for
the school year?
Review my course goals; match my assessments to the goals; re-work lecture notes.
Most used campus resource and why:
The libraries, specifically the online searching resources (I use one or another of them daily) and the occasional visits to a librarian to resolve more stubborn search problems. The reason - finding the latest information and/or study results are key in my science (and teaching).
Most practical advice for balancing teaching,
scholarship, research and life:
Remember there is nothing more important than family; and work smart. Put boundaries around your work tasks and resist becoming the "24-hour" professor. Amazingly, the work WILL get done. There will always be another control group to run and another revision to write, but your children will never be whatever age they are right now, ever again.
In and Around the Northwest
Favorite Northwest activity
or pastime:
Day hike and picnic in one of the state parks (there's plenty especially on the East side of the lake, so start a list)
Favorite weekend getaway:
Whidbey Island
Best family-friendly activity:
When the kids were younger - The Seattle Science Center, The Zoo, and the Aquarium (become members of all three). Now that the kids are teenagers - go to local concerts with them (like Bumbershoot, Deck-the-Hall Ball, etc. there are many during the year; go to the Museum of Glass in Tacoma; go to the Seattle Art Museum; take them to the EMP (Experience Music Project) AND the Science Fiction Museum downtown; go to a Storm game (Women's Professional Basketball - they are fun to watch!).
Favorite happy hour and/or restaurant:
- Seastar: on the Eastside, look out it's pricey -- really good, but pricey
- Purple Cafe: on the Eastside or in Seattle
Favorite place to get cheap eats:
- Old Spaghetti Factory (for sit down)
- Mama's Mexican Kitchen (2nd and Bell) in downtown
- Costco food courts (for limited fast food , i.e. pizza, kielbasas, soft ice cream)
What do you recommend a newcomer to the area
must do and not miss:
Visit Uwajimaya's - it's a delight! Between the exotic food and the merchandise, it is the best Japanse grocery experience around.
See a sunset either at Gas Works Park or on Alki Beach.
Take the ferry and go to Deception Pass and have a picnic dinner.
Fun fact – my childhood aspiration
was to be……..
A priest.
