In and Around the Northwest

Favorite Northwest activity or pastime:

We like to go to Bellingham during the crabbing season. Wake up early, pack some food, bring the nets/bait and wait. It's fun especially if you don't mind reeling in those nets. Pay attention to the policy and restrictions when you get your license. We tend to come away with a chest full of crabs. Besides that, we just enjoy the experience.

Favorite weekend getaway:

Victoria BC - it's accessible and you can take the ferry without having to worry about transportation. A weekend provides you the opportunity to explore the gardens, take a stroll, window-shop, sample food, etc..

Favorite family-friendly activity:

I like to take my younger cousins to festivals. It's a great way to learn more about the history/culture/etc.

Best pet-friendly activity:

My lab Niko loves the dog park. He runs around in the off leash area, if not, he may bolt! He's too spirited. There are a number of dog parks and we like Magnuson Park the best. Oh, if you need to leave your pet behind for a short time, I recommend Camp Happy Paws in Snohomish County. The owners are friendly; facility is kennel-free..

Favorite happy hour and/or restaurant:

Happy Hour:

  • O'Asian (downtown Seattle located in the Bank of America Tower): Dim sum and other PanAsian dishes - decent portions. Definitely worth the trip. Parking is validated after 5:30!
  • Greenlake Bar & Grill (Seattle): sister of Eastlake Bar & Grill. Good food from crab cakes to salmon caesar salad.

Restaurants:

  • Shiro's (downtown Seattle): for sushi fanatics. Try their salmon skin roll.
  • Anthony's Beach Cafe (Edmonds): Northwest fare from seafood to salad. Outdoor seating lends to great views on the water.

Favorite place to get cheap eats:

House of Hong in the International District (downtown Seattle). Cheap, good dimsum.

What do you recommend a newcomer to the area must do and not miss:

Washington has a number of well-reviewed wineries. Take a drive out East towards Walla Walla. Many wineries offer tours and samplings. I also recommend this as a getaway.

Take a day to explore and discover! Visit Tillicum Village on Blake Island State Park. Tours depart from the Seattle Waterfront and runs from May - September.

Fun fact – my childhood aspiration was to be……..
