Teaching Awards

 

It's that time again to nominate a faculty member, staff member or graduate student for the Distinguished Teaching Award; Excellence in Teaching Award; S. Sterling Munro Public Service Teaching Award; and the James D. Clowes Award for the Advancement of Learning Communities. Submissions are accepted through our online nomination form and also via campus mail.

Distinguished Teaching Award
Tenure-track faculty, Lecturers, and Instructors within the University of Washington, Seattle campus are eligible to receive a Distinguished Teaching Award (Bothell and Tacoma campuses hold nominations separately). Individuals whose appointment is less than 100% are also eligible though breadth and depth of achievement weigh heavily. Awardees are chosen based on a variety of criteria including but not limited to: mastery of the subject matter; enthusiasm and innovation in the learning/teaching process and the ability to inspire independent and original thinking. This award may be awarded to a faculty member only once in his/her lifetime and are inducted into the Teaching Academy.

 

Excellence in Teaching Award
Graduate teaching assistants are eligible to receive an Excellence Teaching Award. They are chosen for their demonstration of ability in the teaching and learning process as a graduate assistant. Graduate teaching assistants who are recipients of this award also receive a one-year honorary membership into the Teaching Academy.

 

S. Sterling Munro Public Service Teaching Award
Faculty (tenure-track and full-time faculty members) are eligible to receive this award. The recipient of this award will have demonstrated extraordinary leadership in community-based instruction, service learning as well as public service and community projects. In addition, the recipient will also be funded a graduate student to work him/her during the award year.

 

James D. Clowes Award for the Advancement of Learning Communities
Established in 2003 in honor of James D. Clowes, this award recognizes a faculty or staff member who transforms undergraduate learning at the UW by creating or sustaining learning communities among students. Faculty and staff of the University of Washington are eligible to receive a Clowes Award. The President will recognize the faculty or staff member with an award of $3,000. In addition, Undergraduate Academic Affairs will award $2,000 to the recipient’s program or department to support student participation in learning communities.
