Brotman Award for Instructional Excellence
The Brotman Award for Instructional Excellence was established in 1998, thanks to a generous gift to the University from Jeffrey and Susan Brotman. This award recognizes the accomplishments of programs and departments in advancing excellence in teaching and learning among undergraduates. It will be given to academic units or groups of people who have achieved excellence in teaching and fostered innovative learning throughout a program of study. Recognizing the significant benefits students receive from positive academic experiences, the Brotman Award for Instructional Excellence highlights outstanding educational successes.
Who is Eligible:
Programs, departments or groups of faculty and/or staff within
the University of Washington are eligible to receive a Brotman
Award.
Award Background:
Each year, a total of $35,000 will be available for Brotman
Award. Individual Brotman Award will range from $10,000 to
$35,000 depending upon the number of Award given in a year.
Units receiving a Brotman Award may use the award money in any
way that improves undergraduate education at the University
and is consistent with the general spirit and intent of the
award.
Nomination Procedure:
Nominations are currently accepted. The deadline for the Brotman
Award for Instructional Excellence is Friday, December
7, 2007, 5pm . All members of the University community
(faculty, staff, students and alumni) may submit a one-page
letter nominating a program, group of individuals or department.
Self-nominations are not accepted. Please submit your letter
to: 2008 Brotman Award Selection Committee, 220 Mary Gates

Selection Procedure:
A committee of faculty members, students and Alumni will review
nominations. A subset of those programs nominated will then
be asked, as semi-finalists, to submit supporting documentation
to the Selection Committee along with supporting letters and
materials from their respective Deans or Divisional Deans. The
committee will select a set of Brotman Award finalists from
the semi-finalists. The committee may site-visit finalists prior
to making final award decisions. The committee will make recommendations
to the President, who will make the final Brotman Award selections.
