If you are considering transferring to the University of Washington, Transfer Thursdays are for you!1 If you have already applied and been accepted to the UW, please contact First Year Programs to sign up for Advising & Registration. Transfer Thursday is NOT intended for newly admitted students!
Every Thursday afternoon is dedicated to serving prospective transfer students. At Transfer Thursday you can attend an admission information session, talk one-on-one with an academic and/or admissions counselor, attend one of many departmental or preprofessional program information sessions, go on a tour of campus, and more, all in preparation for transferring into the UW.
Please visit the Transfer Thursday Schedule to find out exactly what sessions will be given on upcoming Thursdays and determine which Thursday is best for you. Then, you may register online to attend. Pre-registration is NOT required but is recommended.
Services include:
- Group information session on transfer admission
- Drop-in academic advising
- Workshops and information sessions
- Transfer Cafe
- Sit in on a UW class
- Recommended websites for prospective transfer students
Keep in mind that parking on and around the UW campus is limited and generally available only for a fee. Prospective students are encouraged to use public transportation if they can (find a bus route to campus at Metro Online) or to learn more about parking on campus by visiting the Commuter Services website.
Group session on Transfer Admission
A counselor from UW's Office of Admissions will present a 30-minute summary of UW's transfer admission requirements every Thursday at 171 Mary Gates Hall. The counselor will be available to answer questions after the session. However, the counselor won't be able to provide detailed individual admissions counseling. We recommend that you start with the group session to get an overview of the admission process and then, if you feel you need more information about your particular situation, make an appointment to meet with an admissions counselor on another day.
On some Thursdays in we offer a workshop on international student admission. Check the Transfer Thursday Schedule for dates and times. On other Thursdays, an international admissions counselor may be available on a drop-in basis in the Office of Admissions (320 Schmitz Hall; 206-543-9686).
Detailed information about transfer admission is available at our very complete transfer admission website.
Drop-in Academic advising
On Thursdays, advisers at the Gateway Center will be available 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. for a brief counseling session to help you with your academic plans. No appointment is necessary. Bring with you an unofficial copy of your transcript for each college attended. The adviser won't do an evaluation of all your transfer credits, but will be able to look over your record and perhaps recommend courses to take before you transfer. The advisers at the Gateway Center are familiar with the admission and graduation requirements of all UW majors, and can help you consider your options. We can also help you if your goal is a professional school, such as medical school or law school.
The adviser will not, however, be able to answer detailed questions about admission to the UW; if you have questions of this nature you should attend the transfer admission session.
If you are interested in a specific major, we encourage you to: 1) check the Transfer Thursday Schedule to see if that department is offering an information session the day you will be here, or 2) if there is no information session, contact the department adviser before visiting campus. That way, you may be able to make an individual appointment with someone specializing in the major you want. You might also take a look at the department homepage.
Evening Degree Program
Every Thursday, an adviser from the Evening Degree Program will see prospective transfer students on a drop-in basis from 3:00-4:00 p.m.UW-Bothell
On the first and second Thursday of most months, an adviser from UW-Bothell will see prospective transfer students on a drop-in basis from 1:00-3:00 to discuss the programs available at that campus. For upcoming dates, see the Transfer Thursday Schedule.UW-Tacoma
On the fourth Thursday of most months, an adviser from UW-Tacoma will see prospective transfer students on a drop-in basis from 1:00-3:00 to discuss the programs available at that campus. For upcoming dates, see the Transfer Thursday Schedule.Workshops and Information Sessions
Each Thursday, the Undergraduate Gateway Center and a variety of other UW departments and offices hold workshops and information sessions. A different combination is offered each week, so check the Transfer Thursday Schedule and plan to visit campus on a day that offers sessions of interest to you.Transfer Café
Tau Sigma, the national honor society for transfer students, organizes this weekly event. It is an informal gathering of admitted and prospective transfer students designed to aid transfer students in their transition to student life at the UW. Feel free to drop in and chat with someone who's gone through what you're going through! Transfer Café is every Thursday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Gateway Center (171 Mary Gates Hall) during Autumn, Winter, and Spring quarters while school is in session. Also, check out the Tau Sigma homepage.Sit in on a UW Class
As long as you're here on campus, why not find out what the classes are like? UW Admissions provides a list of classes that you are welcome to sit in on. No sign-ups, no permission, just go! Professors do ask that you arrive on time, stay for the whole class, and generally conduct yourself in a manner that will not disrupt the class. This list includes classes at various times throughout the week, but some are offered on Thursdays.Recommended Websites for Prospective Transfer Students
