Registration Periods
Period 1 is the time when currently enrolled students register, Period 2 is the time when new students register, and Period 3 is the first week of classes. The dates for these periods each quarter can be found in the Academic Calendar.
Registration periods (sometimes abbreviated "Pd." or "PD" in the Time Schedule) are also used to control when certain groups of students can register for particular courses. For example, a course might have the restriction, "SENIORS ONLY PD 1," meaning that only students with senior standing can register for this course in Period 1. In Periods 2 and 3, students who aren't seniors can register for any remaining space. All such restrictions are listed in the Time Schedule. Click on a course's SLN to see all the restrictions.
Registration Priority and Class Standing
New students register during Advising and Orientation, which is during Registration Period 2. For continuing students, who register during Period 1, your registration date is based on your class standing and the last digit of your student number1.
| Freshman | 0-44 credits |
| Sophomore | 45-89 credits |
| Junior | 90-134 credits |
| Senior | 135 + credits |
Class standing for registration is determined by the number of credits completed, including transfer credits, PLUS the number of credits in progress at the UW. Your credit total is frozen two days before Period 1 begins. If you drop a class after that date, or transfer in additional credits, it won't affect your class standing for registration.
Sample calculation of class standing for registration
A student in her second quarter entered the UW with 20 credits of AP and Running Start credit, completed 15 credits her first quarter, and is currently registered for 15 credits this quarter.
| AP + Running Start | 20 credits |
| UW credits completed | 15 credits |
| UW credits in progress | 15 credits |
| TOTAL | 50 credits |
Even though it's only her second quarter at the UW, she'll be registering for her third quarter as a sophomore.
Graduating Senior Priority (GSP)
If your graduation application has been received by the Graduation and Academic Records office by the deadline (usually 2 days before the GSP registration date), you're allowed to register on the first day of Period 1 (i.e., before other seniors) for your final two quarters. This should enable you to get the classes you need to graduate on time.
See your departmental adviser for more information about Graduating Senior Priority.
Notification of Your Registration Date
New students sign up for their Advising and Orientation dates online through First Year Programs.
Continuing students register for the next quarter about five weeks into the current quarter. You won't receive a regular mail or an email notification that it is time to register. Your registration date for the next quarter will appear in the "Important Dates and Deadlines" section of MyUW. Also, once you know your class standing for registration, you can find out when you register by looking at the Academic Calendar.
