Incoming Freshman To Do List

Before Autumn Quarter begins:

Review registration tutorial online and in your planner
This is the number one technical thing freshmen have to master. It will allow you to successfully change your schedule.
Review the list of academic advisers online and in your planner
Advisers will partner with you as you negotiate the demands of the university and can connect you with resources, possible majors, and a variety of learning opportunities.

During Autumn Quarter:

Attend Dawg Daze events
Learn about UW while you network and make friends
Learn what majors are about and be clear about the admission process for ones that interest you
Some majors you may be considering require sequenced courses taken early in your academic career. Some are highly competitive, others have minimum requirements.
Get to know study resources early, like CLUE, the Instructional Center and department study centers
If you feel you need help in a course, get it early. Using these resources is a great way to form study groups.
Check course prerequisites and take a placement test if required
You may not register for a class without meeting the prerequisite.
Attend an information session about an interesting area of study; make an advising appointment
Begin building an advising partnership as you consider options and begin to make decisions about your future.
Attend an advising registration workshop
Refresh your registration skills while having an opportunity to get course suggestions that provide balance and help you meet your goals. You'll feel more confident about registering for winter classes. Workshop times and dates will be available soon on this website.
Register for winter quarter on the registration date you see on MyUW
Classes fill fast; being prepared and registering on time gives you the best chance to get classes you want.
Visit a professor, TA, or department adviser during office hours
Learn to engage with faculty and staff so that you feel comfortable in the academic environment.
