Peer Advisers: Now Hiring

UAA Advising seeks to hire undergraduate Peer Advisers for the 2017-2018 academic year. Diversity is a core value and foundational concept in our unit, and we are committed to building an inclusive and diverse staff and student community. Applications are due on Feb 3, 2017 @11:59pm.

Peer Adviser Responsibilities

Under the guidance of UAA Academic Advisers, Peer Advisers will:  

  • Work in close collaboration with academic advising staff to support students in Undergraduate Academic Affairs Advising
  • Provide one-on-one drop in advising to pre-major students 
  • Manage the office's advising email account
  • Help students navigate and gain awareness of the UW’s registration policies, general degree requirements, and the Areas of Knowledge
  • Guide students in accessing the many academic resources available at the UW such as MyPlan, DARS, and academic support services
  • Support students with course scheduling
  • Provide appropriate referrals to departmental advisers and campus offices (such as Financial Aid, Registrar’s Office, Health and Wellness, etc.)
  • Prepare and facilitate academic support workshops focusing on the exploration of majors, registration, and pre-professional (pre-health, pre-law, pre-nursing) preparation
  • Support the office’s social media presence
  • Learn, understand, and interpret Federal, State, and University rules and regulations
  • Complete administrative responsibilities including the creation of marketing materials, presentations, and data entry
  • Special projects as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate and interact with diverse populations
  • Highly organized and attention to detail
  • Highly motivated and proven ability to work independently
  • Capacity for discretion, diplomacy, and confidentiality
  • Genuine interest in working with and helping fellow students
  • Good academic standing with at least a 2.7 GPA
  • Completion of three quarters at the UW prior to start date

Desirable Qualifications

  • Prior experience in similar or related activities (e.g., Orientation Leader, Resident Advisor, CUADSS Student Associate, Student Government/Club Executive Officer, work with young adults, or other Peer Advising positions)
  • Experience facilitating workshops or giving group presentations
  • Pattern of excellent attendance and punctuality in prior positions

Position Hours and Pay Rate

  • $15.00/hour
  • Work Study students eligible to apply
  • Peer Advisers will each work an average of 6-10 hours per week. Schedules will vary term to term based on availability. Schedules are provided at the start of each quarter.

Period of Appointment

  • September 2017 – June 2018

Training

  • Mandatory Training: June 12-15, September 19-22
