On January 21, 2013, the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, thousands of University of Washington students, faculty, staff, alumni, friends and neighbors will honor the civil rights leader’s legacy of service by volunteering in the community at more than 90 projects identified by local nonprofit organizations.
Volunteers can lead or participate in such wide-ranging projects as restoring habitat; painting a daycare; providing haircutting services to homeless women; spreading the word about the FAFSA; organizing a foodbank; and more. Sign up here to lead or volunteer for a service project.
“The MLK Day of Service is a really great opportunity for the UW family to come together and deepen its impact in the community,” says Rachel Vaughn, director of the Carlson Leadership and Public Service Center. “For some volunteers, the annual Day of Service is a fun way to socialize and do something that matters greatly to a local organization. For others, it’s a launch-pad to an ongoing commitment to volunteering. Either way, it’s a wonderful opportunity to remember a great man and participate in his legacy of service.”
The day will begin at 8:00 a.m. with a kick-off in the HUB. At the kick-off, volunteers will meet their group, hear from local leaders, and fortify themselves for the day with bagels and coffee. Registering for a service project in advance is strongly recommended, but there may be some projects still available the morning of January 21.
The Day of Service is a 20-year, nationwide tradition. The UW and United Way have partnered on local Day of Service opportunities for more than ten years. The organizations’ efforts have culminated into the largest Day of Service in Washington state.
