University of Washington named Tillman Military Scholar University Partner

Undergraduate Academic Affairs

The University of Washington is one of three new universities selected by the Pat Tillman Foundation to partner with the foundation in support of its Tillman Military Scholars program, which provides educational scholarships for veteran and active servicemembers and their spouses. The foundation has named only 16 universities nationwide to be partner universities.

The Tillman Military Scholars program is open to undergraduate and graduate students from all three UW campuses. Established in 2008, the Tillman Military Scholars program supports educational opportunities for servicemembers and their spouses by filling the financial gaps in the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill. The Tillman Military Scholars program covers direct study-related expenses such as tuition and fees, as well as other needs, including housing and child care.

The criteria for being selected a Tillman Military Scholar includes educational and career ambitions; record of military service (or service as a spouse); motivation for serving; record of personal achievement; demonstration of service to others in the community; desire to continue to serve others and make a positive impact in the community; leadership potential; compelling essay.

The Pat Tillman Foundation chose partner institutions that are leaders in support services for student veterans, active servicemembers and their families. Each University Partner helps identify and select final candidates during the Tillman Military Scholar screening process and, upon selection of Tillman Military Scholars on their campus, supports building community among the scholars.

“We are honored to be a Tillman Military Scholar University Partner,” said Ed Taylor, vice provost and dean of Undergraduate Academic Affairs. “National scholarships like these acknowledge past accomplishments and leadership and invest in students’ potential. Students who are or have been in the military understand deeply what it means to serve. The UW’s partnership with the Tillman Foundation is another way we can show our commitment and gratitude to these students.”

The 2013 application cycle opens January 14, 2013 and closes February 15, 2013. More information is available at the Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships, and Awards website (NetID required). Several info sessions are scheduled; see the website for dates and times. Undergraduate and graduate students from all three UW campuses are encouraged to apply.
