UAA alumnus Peter Kithene shares his inspiring story and work at the UW Gala, September 2011.

UAA alumnus Peter Kithene gave the keynote address at the 2011 University of Washington donor gala, held in Suzzallo Library’s Graduate Reading Room. As an undergraduate, Peter started the Mama Maria health clinics to bring much-needed healthcare to his home village in rural Kenya as well as other rural places in Kenya. Since starting the clinics, Peter received a 2007 CNN Hero Award for his work bringing healthcare to nearly 20,000 people through his Mama Maria clinics.

At the dinner, emceed by Professor Shawn Wong, Peter shared his remarkable and inspiring journey and how his time at the UW impacted him.

Peter is currently earning his master’s in global health at the UW. As an undergraduate, he was a Mary Gates Leadership Scholar, Munro Public Service Award recipient, and Edward E. Carlson Student Leadership Awardee.
