Volunteers needed for the Dream Project’s Admissions Weekend

Undergraduate Academic Affairs

Dream Project Mentor

UW Dream Project mentor helps a student at the 2009 Dream Project Admissions Weekend.

Help local high school students achieve the dream of getting into college.

Join the Dream Project on November 13 and 14 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dream Project’s Admissions Workshop Weekend and help hundreds of local high school students craft competitive college application essays. Students from each of the Dream Project’s thirteen partner high schools are invited to participate in information sessions from a variety of Washington colleges and universities. Many students complete entire college applications over the course of the weekend.

A critical part of the application process and this event is students writing their personal statement. A good writing tutor can help a student produce a powerful, thoughtful, and polished personal essay. This year we are expecting more than 650 high school seniors to attend the workshop.

The Dream Project is looking for people who:

  • Are comfortable working with high school students
  • Can help students formulate their ideas into a strong college application essay
  • Have solid writing skills
  • Have a general understanding of the college admissions process

If you are not comfortable with volunteering as a writing tutor, please consider being a general support volunteer for the event.

If you’re interested in committing to this effort, please register here.

Each morning, there will be a brief orientation and overview of what’s required in an admissions essay.

In addition to the rewarding experience of helping students access higher education, volunteers will also get lunch!

Email the Dream Project Volunteer Coordinators at npg324@uw.edu with any questions.

The Dream Project is a student-initiated high school outreach program that partners UW students with first-generation and low-income students in Puget Sound area high schools to assist in the college admissions process (including SAT prep, applications, writing essays, applying for financial aid, and finding scholarships). Dream Project mentors work with students at weekly high school visits while learning about issues of educational inequality and social mobility.
