UW Kit Connects You to the Internet
A new CD-ROM version of the UW
Internet Connectivity Kit, available on diskettes since last fall,
debuts this Autumn Quarter with additional software.
Software to Meet Your Needs
The connectivity kit still includes custom-designed networking software
that lets you connect your computer to the Internet via the campus
network. With it you can:
-
Run graphical Web browsers
-
Transfer files directly from the Internet to your home computer
-
Have multiple network applications open simultaneously, which would let
you read email, browse the Web, and search library databases via UWIN in
separate windows
Instructions and a core group of applications (Netscape(R) Navigator(R),
file transfer software, and Telnet) are included in the kit to do the
tasks described above.
Get More With CD-ROM
The new UW Internet Connectivity Kit on CD-ROM includes the following
additional software:
The CD-ROM and new diskettes have updated modem phone numbers with the
new area codes that must be used starting this quarter.
Equipment and Account
To connect to the Internet from home using C&C software and instructions,
you need a computer, a modem, a valid UW Uniform Access account, and the
kit appropriate for your Macintosh(R) or Microsoft(R) Windows(R) system.
Your computer system must meet one of the following minimum sets of
specifications:
-
Macintosh running system 7.1 or later with at least 4 MB of RAM (16
recommended) and 5 MB of available disk space (10 or more suggested; 30-50
if using Netscape)
-
Microsoft Windows 3.x or Windows 95 with at least 8 MB of RAM (16
suggested) and 15 MB of available disk space
A minimum modem speed of 14.4 kilobits per second (Kbps) is recommended,
and 28.8 Kbps is preferred. The faster the modem speed, the shorter the
wait to view Web graphics. But no modem will be as fast as a campus
Ethernet connection.
For campus office or residence hall Ethernet connections, the kit can
automatically install Internet connectivity for Windows 95, and includes
instructions to do so for NT and Macintosh.
These connections are available through your Uniform Access
password-protected account, which is to be used only by the university
faculty, staff, or student to whom it is issued. You can get a separate
account through an Internet Service Provider for family members who want
Internet access, or for your personal email.
How to Get the Kit
You may buy the diskette or CD-ROM versions of the UW Internet
Connectivity Kit for $10 at the main University Book Store or at its HUB,
Health Sciences, Bothell, and Tacoma branches. You need to show UW
faculty, staff, or student identification when purchasing.
If you have appropriate file transfer software and are experienced in file
transfer techniques, you can get some of the components of the
connectivity kit free of charge online via anonymous FTP at
ftp.cac.washington.edu in the mac and pc directories, or on the
Web at www.washington.edu/tech_home/software/connect.html
