UWIN Pioneer Dies

Computing & Communications suffered a loss in January when Mike Coghlan, a systems analyst and programmer, died suddenly following a brief illness. Mike had spent much of the previous year leading the team that developed UWIN (the University of Washington Information Navigator) and was still providing the principal technical support for that project at the time of his death.

Mike's role as team leader was vital to the success of UWIN, which was released in September of 1992. He believed deeply in the underlying goal of UWIN, which was--and is--to make the rich world of networked information resources available to the University community. Mike helped to create a sophisticated yet friendly interface, which even novice users will find attractive and easy to use.

He enjoyed this work and was delighted by the success of UWIN. Mike's death was a shock to his colleagues. Those of us who worked closely with him remember his generosity to those less technically adept, his outspoken insistence on keeping the goal in focus, and his good humor. We miss him very much.
