Information for departments

2017 Conference overview

The 2017 TA Conference focuses on evidence-based norms, practices, and resources that help new TAs succeed as instructors.  Graduate students who expect to be RAs will find resources and programs on professional development, working as an RA, and research skills through the Graduate School’s CORE Programs and the UW Libraries.  Information for RAs will be forwarded along to departments as soon as details are available.

Call for facilitators

The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is seeking applications for TA facilitators for workshops at this year’s conference.  Facilitators are provided with resource packets for workshops, attend workshop planning meetings, and receive a stipend.

Please inform experienced TAs in your department of this opportunity and direct them to the information for facilitators page to apply.

Informing your TAs about the conference

At the beginning of June, CTL will send all departments (using the Graduate School’s GPA list) the conference invitation as a PDF, which departments can then forward on to their new TAs directly.

Conference Registration Period A will be open from Monday, June 19 through Monday, August 7.

TAs who do not register by August 7 are still welcome to attend the conference.  However, they will not be assured a seat in every workshop they would like to attend.  Registration Period B information will be on the conference registration webpage after Monday, August 7.

CTL encourages graduate students to take the conference for academic credit. To do so, students register for GRDSCH 501 (1 cr.) in autumn quarter in the UW Time Schedule.

In addition to attending a minimum of three sessions at the conference, GRDSCH 501 students will be required to complete four assignments during autumn quarter through the course Canvas website.  Please let your students know your recommendations regarding registering for GRDSCH 501.

Department workshop recommendations

Many departments recommend specific workshops for their TAs to attend. If you would like to recommend workshops, please do so in the email you send along with the conference invitation.  For more information about what workshops will be offered this year and what times each workshop is offered, see the workshop descriptions and conference program pages.

Note: Space is limited for the Learning Technologies workshops, so please encourage your TAs to register early.

Participation in the conference

Two weeks after the conference, we will send you a list of the TAs from your department who participated in the conference.  We hope that this information is helpful to your department in planning.
