Active Learning Classrooms FPLC
Odegaard Library, currently under renovation, is an interactive, interdisciplinary space for scholarship where technology and information come together. Two state-of-the-art active learning classrooms are being built in Odegaard (available Autumn 2013), providing educators with a unique opportunity to explore how space and technology can promote student learning. Active learning classrooms support case-based learning, guided inquiry, peer learning and just-in-time learning, all of which are increasingly the basis for how classes are taught. Active learning classrooms promote student-centered pedagogy and encourage students to build on prior understanding to solve problems, critically evaluate solutions and create new knowledge.
The Active Learning Classrooms FPLC seeks faculty and instructors who will redesign part (or all) of a course to be taught in the new Odegaard Library Active Learning Classrooms. Educators from any discipline or department are invited to participate.
- Discussion topics will be participant-driven and may include: syllabus and assignment design (or redesign), pedagogy, peer learning and group work, effective use of technology in teaching, information literacy and critical thinking, and more.
- The FPLC format will include discussion, multimedia presentations, workshopping new ideas, and guest discussants with expertise in active learning classrooms.
- Weekly meeting time: Tuesdays, 3:30-4:30pm, Odegaard Library, room 220.
- Contact information: Amanda Hornby, hornbya@uw.edu, and Jill McKinstry, jillmck@uw.edu
