Ongoing support for international and multilingual TAs

Graduate School Memo 15 requires all TAs who are not native speakers of English to participate in the International TA Program, which includes two workshop sessions at the TA Conference in September and optional ongoing support.

Two questions we often hear from departments are:

  • What ongoing support is offered beyond the TA Conference?
  • What if I have to appoint a TA who did not attend the September TA Conference sessions for international TAs?

Ongoing support — beyond the TA Conference

The CTL offers ongoing support for international and multilingual TAs through individual or group consultations, class observations, gathering mid-quarter feedback, and mid-year gatherings in the CTL.

If you are interested in any of these services, please contact us at itap@uw.edu.

What if we want to appoint a TA who did not attend the September TA Conference sessions?

Graduate School Memo 15 requires all international TAs to participate in the International TA Program, which includes two workshop sessions in September before autumn quarter begins. Students do not need to have an autumn quarter teaching appointment in order to attend the sessions; if a student is expected to be a TA at some point during the year, they are encouraged to attend the sessions.

Occasionally students who did not expect to be TAs are given a TA appointment for winter, spring, or summer quarters. These students may not have participated in the September sessions. If this is the case, the students can:

  • Meet with a CTL consultant before they begin teaching
  • Attend the workshops the following September, if the student expects to continue a TAship in future quarters.

To schedule a meeting with a consultant, please call the CTL at 206-543-6588, or send a message to itap@uw.edu.
